During the National Payroll Week, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, announced on 5th September 2023 that he will present the Autumn Statement 2023 to Parliament on 22nd November.
The treasury confirm that the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) have been commissioned to prepare an economic and fiscal forecast to be presented to Parliament alongside his Autumn Statement.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer is the government’s chief financial minister and as such is responsible for raising revenue through taxation or borrowing and for controlling public spending. He has overall responsibility for the work of the Treasury.
What does the Chancellor do?
The Chancellor’s responsibilities cover:
- fiscal policy (including the presenting of the annual Budget)
- monetary policy, setting inflation targets
- ministerial arrangements (in his role as Second Lord of the Treasury)
- overall responsibility for the Treasury’s response to COVID-19
Jeremy Hunt was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer on 14th October 2022.
